Colors
There are many colors of granite quarried throughout the united states in addition to many unique colors from quarries around the world. Some colors are very consistent while others vary significantly from block to block.
The color of granite should be taken into consideration when designing artwork and lettering for the best contrast.
Materials
Memorials today are usually made of granite. Marble was once more common and can be found in older cemeteries. Marble is not as durable and tends to weather more easily than granite. Marble is still available and with proper care can retain its beauty for many years.
Finishes
There are a number of different finishes that determine the appearance of a memorial.
Polished finish - The granite is given a mirror-like finish with the use of various abrasive materials. A polished surface is darker than an unpolished surface.
Steeled Finish - Sometimes called dusted, is a smoothe but not shiny finish and appears lighter than a polished surface.
Rock Pitched Finish - Done by hand by a stone craftsman using his hammer and chisel, it is a rustic finish often used on the tops and ends. Occasionally an entire monument may be rock faced, with smooth panels cut in for lettering.
There are several other finish variations done with different tools to create unique textures in the granite to further personalize your memorial.

The Manufacturing Process
Once a memorial design and lettering is agreed upon, the order is placed with the manufacturer. Domestic granites are both cut and sandblasted in this country, while imported granites are most often cut in the country of origin, with the design, lettering layout and sandblasting done domestically. A fullsize or scale drawing is presented to the family by the manufacturer for verification and approval of lettering, dates and artwork. Once the drawing is approved, the memorial is completed and shipped to Wolfe Granite Memorials for setting in your cemetery.
